Verdict:
Star Trek: New Worlds
Interplay really got our attention with this title, but did they deliver what we, the gamers wanted? It was way back in 1999 when New Worlds hit the gamers with the very first Star Trek colonial strategy. Eager anticipation was kept on with fan sites hitting the web with great previews, until, after much delay, they game hit stores. To be honest, you have to be a real Trekkie to play this one. The game came out with a lot of bugs, and basically, no save game feature, which, after hours of playing one mission, can be rather frustrating. Furthermore, the gameplay was not a smooth as some may have hoped, and with the general game system annoying gamers, (who played 'who can find the feature first') to major frustration and moaning over some message boards. Graphics are the plus side of New Worlds, the terrain is good, and the units (which are the same for each race, just look different) were well modelled in 3D detail. The screenshots for this title mislead you to how good the game really is, and it got most people fooled. So we had nice eye candy. The storyline to New Worlds is unique, after a failed Romulan weapons test, mineral rich worlds spilled out, with the Federation, Klingon and Romulans all vying for control of them. But a mystery unfolds when the Taubat and Hubrin warring races enter the conflict, which could doom the entire campaign itself. The problem is, there are only a few unique missions for each race, which definitely gets boring. The races are more difficult than each other, but you never want to play the same twice. New Worlds therefore is a game that is not playable again and again. Multiplayer is not good, it is the same as the single player and has hardly any customisation, that's why the late Mplayer never had a busy game room. So, if you have a small amount of cash, and you are dieing for this title, go ahead and buy it for a small amount, but don't splash out. The team behind New Worlds is split, so any add-on or patch possibilities are slim. The game is how it is, and it is disappointing.
